I hear it said a lot that if you open a business, you have to have a website. While I agree with this statement, most people I hear saying this have a hard time articulating exactly why every business needs a website. For me there are a lot of reasons that a specific business needs a website, but I find two main reason that ALL businesses need a website. The first is brand legitimacy and the second is that a website is your least expensive employee.
Brand legitimacy is something that every business has to worry about and unfortunately in our Information Age, people are becoming more and more weary concerning companies they do business with. With today’s smarter customer, presenting a legitimate and consistent brand is crucial. While this applies to store fronts and other advertising, it’s most crucial online as this is typically where a potential customer will come to determine if a company is legitimate or not. Your website is the foundation for your online brand and is often what a customer will look for first. Ensuring that they find a well represented brand can make the difference in converting that curious lead into a customer.
The other reason that ALL businesses need a website is that it is your cheapest and most reliable employee. Your website is working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for you. It consistently and reliably lets your customers know about your company, it offers and educates customers about your products and services, and it even collects and notifies you of messages that customers have left all for a fraction of what an employee would cost.
I have talked to several business owners about their website and these two reason and I am constantly shocked that many business owners feel that their current websites are not doing these two things.
